Elegy by George Thalben-Ball: A Masterpiece of Organ Music

Elegy is a piece of organ music composed by George Thalben-Ball (1896-1987), an Australian-born British organist, composer, and conductor. It is one of his most popular and frequently performed works, and has been described as "a miniature tone poem of exquisite beauty".

The piece was written in 1927 as an improvisation on the organ of the Temple Church in London, where Thalben-Ball was the organist for nearly 60 years. He later transcribed it for publication, and dedicated it to his friend and fellow organist Ernest Lough, who had made a famous recording of Mendelssohn's Hear My Prayer at the same church.

Elegy is a short piece, lasting about four minutes, but it contains a wealth of musical expression and emotion. It is in the key of B-flat major, and has a simple ternary form (A-B-A). The A section is a lyrical melody in the right hand, accompanied by soft chords in the left hand and pedal. The B section is a contrasting middle section in G minor, with a more agitated and chromatic melody in the left hand, and a sustained pedal note in the right hand. The A section returns with some variations, and the piece ends with a gentle cadence.

Elegy has been recorded by many organists, and has also been arranged for other instruments, such as brass, strings, and piano. It is often played at funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions, as well as in concerts and recitals. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of English organ music in the 20th century, and a testament to Thalben-Ball's musical genius and sensitivity.
